When should I book my travel consultation?

Book 6 to 8 weeks before departure whenever possible. That leaves time for vaccine series to be completed and for protection to build before you travel. Leaving sooner than that? Do not assume it is too late. Many travel vaccines and medications still provide important protection even a few days before departure, so book as soon as you know your plans.

What happens during the appointment?

Your travel health pharmacist reviews your medications and medical history, assesses your itinerary and planned activities, checks your immunization history, and identifies which vaccines are recommended or required. Vaccines and travel prescriptions can be provided in the same visit, along with over-the-counter recommendations and destination-specific advice.

Are vaccines and medications included in the consultation fee?

No. The consultation fee covers the travel health assessment and your personalized plan. Vaccine and medication costs are separate and vary with your destination and the products recommended. Some travel vaccines require more than one dose.

Can my family or travel group book together?

Yes. Consultations are available for individuals, couples, families, and groups, and each additional traveller on the same itinerary is $45. Book each person through Jane or call the clinic if you would like help arranging a group.

What ages do you see?

Travel consultations are available for travellers of all ages. Vaccines can be administered to individuals 2 years of age and older.

Is a travel consultation covered by insurance?

Travel consultations, vaccines, and travel medications are private-pay services. Coverage varies by insurance plan, so check with your insurer before booking. You will receive a receipt for your records.

Where do appointments take place?

Appointments take place in person at Cunard Pharmacy & Clinic, 1329 Lower Water Street, inside The Cunard on the Halifax waterfront.

Do you offer the yellow fever vaccine?

Yes. AbroadRx appointments take place at Cunard Pharmacy & Clinic, which the Public Health Agency of Canada lists as a designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. If your itinerary calls for it, the vaccine and the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis can be provided at your appointment. For a first yellow fever vaccination the certificate becomes valid 10 days after the dose, so book with that in mind.
